The department offers two graduate thesis programs, a MS and a PhD degree. Each program is customized to the individual student's interests, strengths and academic background. The focus in on providing the intellectual and physical environment that will enable students to generate original groundbreaking research, presentations, and publication in professional journals. Students are required to complete one semester as a teaching assistant during their graduate work, but they can do more if there is personal interest or by individual faculty request. Applicants are required to submit the following: Completed application form. Transcripts of all previous college or university work. GRE scores---verbal, quantitative, and analytical. (The ETS code for Rice is: 6609;the code for Rice Earth Science Department is 0504.) Foreign students whose language of instruction was not English must submit TOEFL scores. The Rice university code is 6609; the department TOEFL code is 71. For the iBT TOEFL, a minimum score of 90 is required. For the IELTS, the required minimum score is 7. Four letters of recommendation are preferred, however we will accept three.
