The program owes much of its definition to Daniel Weissbort, director and mentor for nearly forty years (1965-2003), translator from the Russian and French, and co-founder with Ted Hughes of the landmark Modern Poetry in Translation. Consistent with his legacy, the MFA program in Literary Translation still combines creative practice, international literature in-the-making, with training in world languages, literatures and theory. In a given year, it is not unusual for our student cohort to translate from six or more source languages into English. Our focus is on creating works that convey both the distinctness of the original and the immediacy of contemporary language. In the Workshop and a variety of translation-based seminars, we reflect on ideas of literariness, cultural history, cultural politics, and authority as we consider the relationship between authors and texts, authors and translators, translations and readers, and the media landscapes in which they circulate.

Admission to the Graduate College, which confers the majority of degree programs at Iowa, requires: a score of 550 or higher on the paper-based (PBT) version of the test, or a score of 81 or higher on the Internet-based version of the test (iBT). Newly admitted graduate students who present TOEFL scores below 600 on the PBT or below 100 on the IBT will be required to complete an English Proficiency Evaluation on campus before their first registration for classes. There is no conditional admission for graduate students whose TOEFL scores are below 550 on the PBT or below 81 on the IBT.
