TOEFL
The minimum TOEFL score set by the university for admission is 550 paper-based, 79 internet-based, but the Department of Linguistics prefers a TOEFL score of 600 paper-based, 100 internet-based. The TOEFL test must be taken within 2 years of the date you plan to enroll at UB; this 2-year limit is waived for those who are currently studying at a U.S. university providing the minimum score of 79 iBT, was obtained when admitted to the U.S. university and the applicant has a copy of the original score sheet which must be attached to the online application.
IELTS
The minimum TOEFL score set by the university for admission is 6.5 IELTS, but the Department of Linguistics prefers an IELTS score of at least 7.5. The IELTS test must be taken within 2 years of the date you plan to enroll at UB; this 2-year limit is waived for those who are currently studying at a U.S. university providing the minimum score of 6.5 IELTS (with no sub-score below 6.0) was obtained when admitted to the U.S. university and the applicant has a copy of the original score sheet which must be attached to the online application.
GRE
To be considered for M.A. admission, our Admissions Committee prefers a combined quantitative and verbal GRE score of at least 300 and an analytical writing score of at least 3.0. However, in exceptional cases, evidence from other parts of the dossier can compensate for lower GRE scores.

Personal Statement. (Please be sure to indicate the M.A. track you are interested in: General Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Germanic Linguistics, or East Asian Languages and Linguistics. If you are interested in our East Asian Languages and Linguistics program, please indicate if you are interested in specializing in Korean or Japanese. We are unable to offer the Chinese concentration in our East Asian Languages and Linguistics M.A. program until further notice--it will most likely be at least two years before we are able to offer the Chinese concentration.)

Applicants residing in New York State and can apply to the fee waiver option here, provided that they have an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0 and meet the admissions deadlines.

The application Fee is $75 U.S. (payable online or by check or money order made payable to the University at Buffalo).
RL
Three letters of recommendation. Please list the names, addresses and email addresses of your referees in the appropriate fields on your online application. Once your application is formally submitted, each referee will receive an email containing instructions regarding submitting your recommendation letter electronically.
Transcript
Copies of all B.A. and graduate transcripts (and certified English translations, if applicable). International applicants must also submit proof of each degree. Please attach copies of your undergraduate and any graduate transcripts to your online application. If you are offered admission and you accept our admission offer, original official transcripts/certified true copies will need to be submitted upon arrival at UB.
