TOEFL
International applicants may be required to provide proof of English proficiency via TOEFL or IELTS. The exam results must be dated within 2 years from your proposed date of admission and remain valid upon entering the term you applied for. The University at Buffalo has a minimum TOEFL score requirement of 550 (paper-based) or 79 (internet-based).
IELTS
International applicants may be required to provide proof of English proficiency via TOEFL or IELTS. The exam results must be dated within 2 years from your proposed date of admission and remain valid upon entering the term you applied for. On IELTS, UB requires an overall score of 6.5 with no band below 6.0.
GRE
GRE score is required for all Ph.D. applicants and MS applicants (only if BS degree was obtained from a non-US institute). We do not have any minimum GRE score requirement for admission into our program. However, a good GRE score is very important for admission into our graduate program. The average GRE score of students admitted to our graduate program is approximately 311 (GRE V+Q) in last three years and most funded students are substantially higher.

Your statement of purpose essay should clearly state your career goals, research interests, and name of at least three faculty members with whom you want to work with. Tell us how you will fund your studies and whether you will attend if financial assistance is not available.
GPA
The minimum undergraduate GPA for admission to our MS program is 3.0 and 3.25 for admission to our Ph.D. program directly after bachelor's degree.

Copies of Transcripts
Please upload copies of transcripts from all schools attended (beyond secondary), even if degree was not received. The following are some suggested guidelines:
1. You may upload an institutional web based transcript/academic record.
2. You must ensure that the institution name and other identifying marks are not missed during the scanning process and that your scanned copy can print on letter size paper (8 1/2" x 11")
3. You will want to ensure that you also include the transcript legend (located on the back page in most cases).
4. While we prefer that you upload transcripts from an individual institution into a single file, in the event you encounter issues with the quality of the scan, please feel free to upload individual pages into multiple files. If necessary, you can upload up to 15 individual files. Please note, if you are uploading files after you have submitted your application for formal review, you will only be able to submit one files at that time, all other supplemental transcripts should be emailed directly to the department to which you are applying.
