TOEFL
For those choosing to take the TOEFL, a minimum score on the paper-based TOEFL of 550, or 220 on the computer-based test, or 83 on the internet-based test is required for admission.
IELTS
For those choosing to take the IELTS, a minimum overall score of 7 from the IELTS test is required for admission.
GRE
GRE scores must be received by the Division of Graduate Studies prior to the application deadline. Have the Educational Testing Service forward your test scores electronically to the UC Santa Cruz Graduate Studies Office (School Code 4860). It is not necessary to indicate a department code since all scores are sent to the Division of Graduate Studies. Hard copies of score reports will be discarded, only electronic scores will be accepted.

This should be a concise, well-written essay about your background and your reasons for pursuing graduate study in the field you have chosen. Selection committees place particular importance on the statement of purpose. It exhibits your ability to present ideas in clear, coherent language. In general, the statement of purpose should indicate:
- How knowledgeable you are in the desired field of study
- How your undergraduate studies and other experiences (work, community involvement, and so forth) serve as a foundation for graduate study
- How and why you intend to build on this foundation of knowledge and apply your graduate training to social or theoretical problems
Recommended length is a concise 2-4 pages, single-spaced.
Fee
The application fee for the 2017-17 academic year is $105 for domestic applicants and $125 for international applicants. This fee can be paid by credit card or e-check (the e-check option is only available if you have a U.S. bank account).
RL
Three letters of recommendation are required. Additional letters will be reviewed, but will not help or hurt your application. All recommendation letters are required to be submitted electronically through the online application. You must register a minimum of three recommenders, and as many as five, via the Recommendations page of the online application.
Letters should be prepared by professors, professional contacts, or others who may best speak to your abilities and academic potential in your chosen field of study.
Transcript
Unofficial transcripts are accepted for the application process. Uploading your unofficial transcripts in the online application helps us process your application materials more efficiently. Unofficial copies may either be scanned versions of your official transcript or a downloaded PDF from your institution's online portal.
If you are admitted to UCSC, we will require that an official, sealed transcript be sent directly from your degree-granting institution prior to enrollment at UC Santa Cruz.
