Graduate students in Materials Science and Engineering work closely with faculty and conduct research in state-of-the-art facilities, especially those in electron microscopy. They carry out research that advances current understanding and knowledge in the field. Our world-renowned Materials Science faculty enjoy close ties with, and support from, industry and government. Research in the Materials Science and Engineering department is sponsored by NSF, NASA, the Office of Naval Research, the U.S. Department of Energy, the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, and many industrial partners. For example, a $7.5 million grant from U.S. Department of Defense funds a Lehigh-led team of scientists from Lehigh, Carnegie-Mellon, Clemson, Illinois, and Kutztown universities to determine how the atomic structure of grain-boundary interphases affects the mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties of strategic engineering materials.
