At the master's level, the academic program consists of a core series of required courses covering those aspects of materials science considered essential to a fundamental understanding of materials; these courses cover physical and mechanical properties, materials characterization, thermodynamics, and kinetics as well as applied mathematics.
The requirements for the Ph.D. degree include the aforementioned required courses plus more specialized materials courses, as well as additional mathematics and materials physics courses. Two options are available, one with a thesis and the other by lecture course credit only. The first is available to all students, the second is only available to Outreach or part-time students and does not require a thesis. Transfer is not permitted from the first to the second option, although transfer is acceptable from the second to the first.
